I have been working with Brigitte Jörg of the CERIF Support Project to consider how the RIOXX application profile might be expressed in CERIF. CERIF has become the de-facto standard for data exchange between Current Research Information Systems (CRIS), particularly in Europe. A minor update to the RIOXX application profile (v0.91) has been published, and a draft XSD schema intended for validation of RIOXX records has been made available. Work is under way to commission plugins/patches for both ePrints and DSpace to help institutional repositories to implement the guidelines and application profile. The technical specifications for this work will also be made freely available for developers to implement support for other platforms.

The most important requirement for RIOXX is to provide a way to collect basic information about how research outputs (especially papers) have been funded. That is to say, we need to collect two types of information for a given paper: the funder the project or grant ID under which this research output was funded RIOXX has at its heart a simple application profile of Dublin Core, the better to fit naturally with existing technical infrastructure and to be easily implemented.

We are please to announce that version 0.8 of the guidelines and application profile is available for public comment. There is still some work to do, but we anticipate that the final version (1.0) will not depart from the current version significantly. Please do comment on this version - it is quite likely that this will be the final public consultation before we publish version 1.0.
